A BRIEF HISTORY OF TUNG HUA SCHOOLS FORMATION IN 1922 A few chinese settlers at 1½ mile, Tun Abang Haji Openg Road (it was then called Queensway) formed a Board of Directors in 1922 for the setting up of Tung Hua Primary School. Headed by Mr. Soon Ah Hiong, the Tung Hua Primary School Board engaged Mr. Lau Tiew Kee as the first headmaster of the School. Mr. Kong Chu Soon was the Vice Chairman of the School Board with Mr. Ho Siong Kang as the Secretary. Mr. Wong Cheng Chuong was the Treasurer with Mr. Hii Chuong King as the auditor. Other Board members included Mr. Kong Pui Chiong, Mr. Tiong Kung Huat, Mr. Ting Chuong Hock, and Mr. Yong Chee Sieng. For the first decade, Tung Hua Primary School gained her propularity as a community school catering to the need of the Chinese students in the area. In 1934, the then Headmaster, Mr. Wong Leong Ting made a serious attempt to open up Tung Hua Secondary School. With the strong backing from the School Board, Tung Hua Secondary School was formed in the same years. Mr. Wong Leong Ting was made the Headmaster taking charge of both the primary and secondary streams of Tung Hua School. With the coming on-stream of the Secondary Session, the student population was increased to over 120 people, and she had the staff strength of 12 teachers. During that time, Tung Hua School was one of the best equipable Junior Secondary Schools in Sibu. In 1942, Sarawak was under the Japanese Occupation. Tung Hua Schools were also occupied by the Japanese Imperial Army. The Schools were teaching Japanese language and they become the national type schools during the Japanese occupation period of 1942-1945. When the Atlies bombed Sibu in 1945, both Tung Hua Primary and Secondary School’s buildings were almost completely destroyed. There left only the kitchen and the dining room. With the defeat of the Japanese Imperial Government in 1945, most of the schools in Sibu resumed their normal classes by early 1946. Tung Hua Schools were no exception. The area community under Mr. Ngieng Siew Ping, Mr. Kong Chu Soon, Mr. Hii Eik Ho, Mr. Lau Hiong Ing, Mr. Lau Heng Ting, Mr.Tiong Ee Hai, Mr. Tiew Sing Chuong, Mr. Wong See Ngiik, and others formed the School Board. The Board went to put up simple wooden buildings for the schools so that normal classes could start as soon as possible. In 1951, Tiong Hin Secondary School and Tung Hua Schools were jointly conducting the classes. But the 2 schools were separated in 1953 with two different management teams. Tung Hua Schools accepted the Government grant assistance in 1956 which thus became the aided schools. In 1964, a year after the formation of Malaysia with Sarawak giving the Federation, our schools agreed to the reformation proposal whereby the junior secondary stream’s medium of instruction was changed from Chinese to English. During the same year, the schools bought a piece of Land adjacent to the existing premises. Today, Tung Hua School have a total land area of 3.75 acres. In 1967, Tung Hua Secondary School produced the first batch of Junior Secondary Certificate Students (Form 3). During the same year the first block of 2-story concrete school building was completed. SEPARATION Since 1934, The Primary and Junior Secondary streams of Tung Hua Schools were jointly managed by one Headmaster. It was not until 1970 that the 2 streams were separated. It was also in 1970 that the first block of concrete school building in Tung Hua Primary School was erected. In 1972, the second block of concrete building for Tung Hua Secondary School was declared opened. It was in the same year that Tung Hua Secondary School participated for the first time in 1973 in Malaysia Senior Cambrige Examination (Form 5 Exam). In the same year the primary school began an additional class for admission to her primary one. With the growing students intake, Tung Hua Secondary School offered 2 classes for the art stream form 4 students in 1974. By 1975, the secondary session had a third block of concrete school facilities building added to her hardware.The 3-storey building contained the school library with the addition of Home Science and Wood works classes. It was in 1976 that Tung Hua Secondary School has had the student population of increasing to over one thousand students. In the same year, the second concrete block of school building was added to the primary school. With the progressing introduction of Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction for all Sarawak Secondary School, Tung Hua Secondary School started using Bahasa Malaysia as the main medium of instruction as from Transition classes in 1982. In 1986, the third concrete block of school building was added to the Secondary stream. In the following year of 1987, Tung Hua Primary School was proud to have her own mini-indoor stadium. On August 29th 1987, the management Board Chairman of the schools, Yang Bhg. Datuk Amar Ling Beng Siong performed the earth-breaking ceremony for the construction of school hall building for Tung Hua Secondary School. Tung Hua Primary School boosted her third concrete block of her school building in 1988 which consists of 4 classrooms, one staff room and office for the Headmaster and the Assistant Headmaster. In 1989, the magnificent school Hall of Tung Hua Secondary School was official launched. The new building has 4 science laboratories and toilet facilities. The school hall could accommodate 4 badminton courts which has a seating capacity of over 1,000 people. In the same year, Tung Hua Secondary School has had a joint venture project with the private sector by conducting computer courses for her students. This begins the serious efforts to promote information technology which is in consonance with the new age. Tung Hua Secondary School has seen a growing number of Bumiputera Students. In line with the official requirement, in 1991 the school turned the hitherto ping-pong room into the prayer room for the muslims. In 1993, the 4th concrete block of 3-storey school building for Tung Hua Primary School was officially launched. The new building has 6 classroom, one school canteen and quarters for the school caretaker. With the increase in student population, Tung Hua Secondary School put up a 5-storey concrete block building in 1994. Upon completion, it has 10 classrooms, one canteen, a library, one computer room, some indoor sports facilities and 2 quarters for the care-takers. Today, Tung Hua Primary School has about 1,400 students with a teaching staff strength of about 50 people. Tung Hua Secondary School has over 2,100 students with a teaching staff of about 100 teachers. In addition she has 15 non-teaching staff. Today SMK Tung Hua could boast themselves as one of the most well-equipped secondary and primary schools in Sibu.
