The History of Shan Tao High School

Shan Tao, which means 'Good Guidance' in chinese was formerly known as Shan Tao High School.  It was founded by Rev. Fr. John Tsung, a Catholic priest from China in 1963.

Shan Tao High School started by sharing classrooms with SRJK Sacred Heart at SRJK Sacred Heart itself from 1963 to 1964 and later with similar arrangement at SRJK Kung Min which is now known as SRJK Shan Tao.  It was only in 1967 that Shan Tao High School has its first block of building at the present premises due to the dedications and determinations of its principal, Fr. Rev. John Bernard Yong, teachers and students.  It was officially opened by the Yang Berbahagia Mr. J. Ambrose who was then the Director of the Education Department of Sabah.

The number of Remove class students increased from ninety in 1963 to six hundred when the first building was officially opened.  The yearly increase of students had resulted in the school having both morning and afternoon sessions beginning in 1970.  The afternoon session then was supervised by Mr. Ng Boon Lian.

In 1970, another storey building was added to accomodate the science laboratory and classrooms for the Home Science subject.  Later another block of building was built behind the main block.  It housed the temporary hall, a hostel and toilets.  However, it was later used to accomodate the SRJK St. James' students temporarily.  In 1983, a proper school hall was built during the tenureship of its principal, Mr. Chin Tet Foh from donations collected by the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA).  Soon, an air-con library was made available from the funds collected from a 'Walkathon' organised by the Red Cresent Society.  In 1986, the computer room which was also funded by the PTA was officially opened by the YB Encik Yong Teck Lee.

In 1987, another new block was built to accomodate classrooms and science laborataries.  This was initiated by the chairman of the School Management Board, YB. Mr. Chin Kok Kong and Mr. Chin Tet Foh.  This building was officially opened on 17th June 1987 by the Yang Berbahagia Mr. Mahpor Baba who was the Director of the Education Department of Sabah.  A Funfair was organised in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the new building block.  Later it was used for administration purposes when the staffroom and the office were moved from the main block.  At the same time, the library was also moved to this block.  The equipped Physics and Chemistry laborataries are also sited here.

The school and its Management Board under the leadership of the YB Datuk Yong Teck Lee then decided to build a multi-purpose hall.  The laying down of the cornerstone was done by the YB Datuk Bernard Dompok on the 22nd June 1987.  It was officially opened by Rev. Fr. Cornelius Piong, the representative of the Yang Berbahagia Datuk Bishop John Lee who is the Bishop of the Sabah Catholic Church on 18th December 1989.

Under the leadership of the principal, Mdm Peggy Chan, the school was equiped by having three resource centres in 1990. The number of books in Resource Centre I has increased.  Teaching aids and audio visual equipments such as radios, televisions and OHPs' were placed in Resource Centre II.  The Resource Centre II is only meant for teachers to diversify their teaching methods.  Resource Centre III was sponsored by a group of former students and supporters who donated five computers and printers of the latest model.

The school then was further expanded under the leadership of the present principal, Mr. Lee Wah Ban.  The computer lab was set up by the PTA and Mr. Lee Wah Ban in 2004, to accomodate the students with the latest development in ICT.  In 2008, the PTA sponsered another 29 set of new computers, in addition of the present 27 sets.  To this date, the latest plan of the schools' Management Board is to raise fund to build a new administrative block.
