SMK Yoke Kuan emerge triumphant in nail-biting volleyball final

TOWERING Pua Dek Wei led SMK Yoke Kuan to win the boys’ title in the Selangor Under-14 volleyball championships at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) Volleyball Hall in Section Four, Shah Alam recently.

SMK Yoke Kuan, from Sekinchan, Sabak Bernam upstaged SMK Seri Kembangan 26-24, 26-24 in the final.

It was an exciting final and the match could have gone either way. SMK Yoke Kuan coach Chia Ju Jing said they were happy to emerge as the champions.

“It was a close match and luck was on our side in the crucial moments of the match. The players were impressive throughout the competition,’’ saidJu Jing.

However, in the girls’ final, SMK Seri Kembangan were superior and outclassed SMK Jalan Bukit, Kajang 25-13, 25-4.

A total of 25 teams — 14 in the boys and 11 in the girls categories — took part in the three-day championships.

Competition director Tan Chee Keong said the championships was a platform to identify players for the National Under-14 championships starting in Batu Pahat, Johor on Monday.

“We are pleased with the response as the championships was organised with only a short notice. For the players, it was an opportunity to gain exposure. The consistent teams made it to the final,’’ said Tan.

The Selangor Volleyball Association (SVA) have appointed Khaw Choon Siong and Lim Cher Wei has the coaches for the Selangor teams for the national championships.

Tan said the selected players would go through a centralised programme before the final squad is named on Friday.

“We hope to see the teams doing well in the national championships,’’ added Tan.
