The growing use of versatile plug-ins to play a variety
of sound formats makes it less necessary to know many technical
details about which platforms play which sounds and how
to convert between them. Nevertheless, those interested
in more technical details of audio formats can do a search
in Webopedia in E-Teacher's Glossary
and get a list of specific web sites.
General sources of sound files on the Web may be found
in the Yahoo listing of sound file archives and in the Sunsite
Sound Archives. For MIDI files, try the Sources of Midi
Files link at Harmony-Central.
Streaming audio players may be obtained from Real,
Microsoft (Windows
Media Player) and Apple (Quicktime
5). Comprehensive listings of streaming audio feeds
are available at Realguide.
