Like telnet, FTP is an established protocol. It still
gets extensive use, though many anonymous FTP sites are
being replaced with corresponding Web sites, and it is
now common to access even FTP sites with a Web browser
rather than with a separate FTP program.
The most extensive modern usage of FTP is to transfer
files between one networked computer and another where
the user has accounts. This is quite analogous to anonymous
FTP, except that you have to login with a user name and
password. For example, the transfer of files from Web
development sites to Web servers is often accomplished
with FTP. A more extensive introduction to the FTP protocol
may be found in Zen
and the Art of the Internet.
