SMJK Sin Min First School To Use Smartcard In Kedah
SUNGAI PETANI, March 22 (Bernama) -- Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Sin Min here is the first school in Kedah to introduce a smartcard for multiple use.
Its functions are similar to the Touch n' Go Card used by motorists to pay highway toll.
The students are required to "load" some money before using the cards.
It was introduced in stages beginning with Form One students last year and is being used by students at all levels now.
School Principal Tee Pak Leong said students benefited from the card in many ways.
For example, they can save time to buy food cashless during recess.
They can also use the cards to buy stationery in school and borrow books in the library.
He said the card also comes in handy if students lost their pocket money or when faced with threats from strangers.
"The smartcard also serves as a prepaid card allowing students to top up money in the card," he said. The top up amount is RM5, RM10 and RM50.
The smartcard contains information such as the students' name, photograph and other personal details like examination marks and points for discipline.
Tee said the students only need to scan the card in the barcode scanner and the details would appear on a computer screen, including the credit balance.
Tee, who is the mastermind behind the smartcard idea, said the school and Parent-Teacher Association jointly allocated RM20,000 to implement the smartcard system.
There are seven card-readable computers in the school. They are installed at the library, canteen and school bookshop.
He said the students would be issued a replacement smartcard if they lost their original card.
The school would also install an Uninterrupted Power Supply system in the event of a power cut in school, he added. -- BERNAMA
